COAX LOSS TEST

by Glen K4KV

I have recently bought two types of coax, and have power tested them both to check for actual
loss versus what the manufacturer claims.

I was pleasantly surprised that both types exceeded their specifications. All tests done on 100 feet.

Type Frequency of test Claimed loss Actual Loss
Wireman RG-8X foam 146.5Mhz 4.5 dB 3.0 dB
Davis RF Bury-Flex 146.5Mhz 1.75 dB 1.6 dB
  52.5Mhz 1.1 dB 1.0 dB
  28.2Mhz 0.81 dB 0.67 dB
  3.8Mhz   0.25 dB
I also tested 25 year-old 9913  coax 150Mhz New coax claims 1.75 dB old coax tested 3.0 dB

So there is a reason to change the coax, or, at least, move your old 2 meter feed-line to hf where it is not so critical.
