SKYWARN - ARES

PLEASE REMEMBER WHEN SEVERE WEATHER IS IN OUR AREA, THERE WILL BE A WEATHER NET ON THE REPEATER.

Coastal Plains Amateur Radio Club has been involved in the Skywarn and ARRL ARES since the early 80's. The Skywarn program is where CPARC works as volunteers with the National Weather Service as trained weather watchers. Members of our club are trained by the National Weather Service to relay current weather conditions to the weather office when there is pending severe weather in our area. The weather service uses information relayed by trained weather watchers to issue a severe weather or tornado warning. CPARC was one of the first clubs to be involved with the NWS and their skywarn program in south Georgia, going back to the mid to early 1980's

Tallahassee NWS is the weather office for our area.

The national Skywarn web pages have some great information.

ARES

ARES is an ARRL organization that is titled [ Amateur Radio Emergency Services ]. Being a part of ares, the CPARC members have a communications capability to help our local government with critical communications during an emergency, when needed. Our members who participate in ARES work to keep their equipment ready to work in an emergency. One of the main benefits of our capabilities is to provide communications when the power goes off in the area. Operating a mobile, fixed, or portable on battery power is very important.

We are including links to the Georgia ARES Pages. All members and amateur operators are encouraged to sign up as an ARES member with your local radio club.
